Sir Howard Staunton was considered one of the best chess players in the world during the 19th century. The unofficial world champion from 1843–1851. He was involved not only in the practical game of chess. He was also an organizer of chess life, journalist and author of chess textbooks, a recognized theoretician of chess, and the creator of rules regarding the game itself and the way it is played. From 1845, for the next 29 years, he edited the chess column for the Illustrated London News, becoming the most influential chess columnist in the world. In 1847 he published the Chess-Player’s Handbook, the most famous of his series of chess books. In 1849, Staunton signed a set of chess pieces designed by Nathaniel Cook and produced by John Jaques. He recommended the pieces in his chess newspaper. Their shape has become the most popular pattern of chess pieces in the world and is still used today in most chess tournaments.
