Our chess draws on the traditions of the Byzantine Empire, which dominated southeastern Europe and Asia Minor for nearly 1,000 years. The chess pieces are inspired by the famous Macedonian dynasty, whose members sat on the imperial throne in the years 867-1056.

During the times of the Macedonian dynasty, Byzantium entered a phase of development and flourishing called the Byzantine Renaissance. The Byzantines paid homage to the classical period, expanding it with Christian elements, which became an inspiration for the art of subsequent eras. It was a time of prosperity, prestige and military power of the Empire.
