Sir Howard Staunton was considered to be 19. one of the best chess players in the world in the 20th century. Unofficial world champion from 1843 to 1851. He was not only engaged in practical chess. He was also an organiser of chess life, a journalist and author of chess textbooks, a renowned chess theoretician, and the creator of the rules of the game itself and the way it is played. Since 1845. For the next 29 years he edited the chess section of the Illustrated London News, becoming the world’s most influential chess columnist. 1847. In 1999, he published the most famous of his chess books, The Chess Player’s Handbook. 1849. In 2007, Staunton signed a set of chess knobs designed by Nathaniel Cook and produced by John Jaques. He suggested buttons in his chess magazine. Their shape has become the world’s most popular chess button pattern and is still used in most chess tournaments today.
